I've finally come to a point where going back to school is a feasible course of action. So back in November (2008) I applied for admission to the University of Maryland for Fall 2009. I thought I was getting a good early start, but those losers at the school somehow managed to misplace the transcript I sent them. I hand-delivered a copy to them this month...or maybe March.

Well! I received a letter from the school yesterday and totally didn't notice till today because it was underneath a huge stack of junk mail! I was searching for our utility bill when I found it (because you NEVER find what you are looking for, but rather something else of value). I grabbed it and ran to Koss and demanded to know when it came in the mail, because obviously he would know everything about our mail. Then I took the more practical approach to discovering the answer, ripping open the envelope to reveal it's papery insides:

Congratulations! I am pleased to offer you admission to the University of Maryland for the Fall 2009 semester. Durig or review, we were impressed with your academic achievements, talents and experiences. You should take great pride in all you have accomplished.

Never has a form letter looks so good!

Actually, I'd be officially declared as a major for "Spanish Language and Literature." It's what I have the most credits for, and what I feel most confident in being able to do the work for/sustain interest in.

By the way -- I went to confirm my enrollment online, and was prompted to make a payment of $400. Naturally, the webpage didn't say what that $400 was for--down payment toward class fees, student fees, bribes, etc. Do you have any idea?

*shrug* I can ask my roommate RJ, he's the only student I know who's 100% paying his own way. I myself have never had to initiate a payment to the University because my parents are funding my schooling.

As for the fee, I don't know without the form, but usually they want a deposit to make sure you're serious about attending.

I believe this should properly convey my feelings on the matter.

Chibi: Apparently, there is a $150 non-refundable confirmation deposit (credited towards my "Freshmen Connection tuition"...though I'm not a Freshman). Which doesn't explain where the other $250 goes.

In my experience, a lot of colleges (especially state ones) have some kind of bullshit "admission fee" that you pay first once getting accepted. Hopefully that's not the case with UoM though.

You said they were accepting credits? How much of a boost will it give you towards your degree?

If you're able and get the chance, you should definitely try to study abroad somewhere, even for just a few weeks in the summer!

Hopefully a lot. I earned 81 credits at TMC, with an average GPA of 3.516 (which includes the 0.00s I got for the failing courses the last semester). I'd already filled the requirements of most of my "core" classes. I hope most or all of those transfer, cuz I really do not want to pay to attend an entry level English course (let alone their "this is how we use a 'computer'" course). I'd also earned 15 credit hours in Spanish, all in standard classes that should have UM equivalents.

10 business days from the day the acceptance letter was sent to me, I can log onto their website and get an idea of which of my credits will transfer.

I'd love to visit Spain again, especially to study! It'd be hard to leave Mike behind, even for a few weeks, but he has to do trips for his work, too, and I'd have delicious paella to console me.

Well, at least it counts toward your tuition. Are you eligible for financial aid or any sort of sorcery like that?

I finished filling out my FAFSA today, and a preliminary accessment thinks I'm eligible for a low-interest student loan (depending on the cost of education and such). I may also be eligible for "old people going back to school" scholarships, according to UM's site.

Today, I finally get to see (some of?) the courses that I might get transfer credit for.

Right now, it looks like I can get 29 credit hours, of the 81 earned, to transfer. These are mostly for core requirements: art, speech, social sciences, and a first year seminar. Only one Spanish course is transferring (Spa260, Spanish Conversation), although I am also getting 6 mystery credits--possibly for my Spanish AP exam. My Japanese & intro to Business classes are also transferring.

So far, the "These are the classes that we might accept transfer credit from" page looks like a partially-complete copy of my TMC transcript. The classes are in order and everything. I'm hoping that maybe, if I check tomorrow, there will be more classes on there. It'd be terrible if I had to pay to take Comp Sci again.

You shouldn't have to worry about a computer science course, because I know I've never had to take one and all of my core credits are done!

Update to my uni pages: all 56 college-earned credit hours may transfer. The other 25, earned through AP tests, are a mystery.

Well, I'm registered. I'll be attending classes Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning. I'm taking my entry level English course, which I somehow managed not to be exempt from (ultimately okay--so long as I get an A, I'll be exempt from my upper level English course, which I couldn't have otherwise been exempted from) and also a 300-level Spanish lit course. My first class is Sept 1. I should probably spend most of my time on remedial grammar study...it's been a while since I've been in college!
