BATTLE FOR THE FF AVATAR

So, it seems someone leaked some of the character portraits being used for Final Fantasy: Dissidia, for PSP.

Two of them happen to be Cecil and Butz:

I am now torn on which one to make into an avatar. =(

So rather than do the mature, responsible thing and decide for myself, I leave it to you! Who should get the spot? =O

Terra, because she doesn't wear makeup.

Butz's sprite looks way manlier than that picture. He wears as much jewelry as my grandmother in that, which weirds me out.

Tidus' picture for that game has one earring.

He wears it on his shirt collar.

wtf

Are you calling his fashion choice into question, Mr? e.e

Also Mr. Tastic:

Apparently Terra sold out to the makeup companies. =(

Yeah, she bleached her hair.

My issue in Butz number one wasn't the makeup or the jewelry. It was the cleavage. He looks like he's got a sweet rack in that image, which makes it harder for me to think, "hey look a dude."

I vote Butz because his name is Butz.

There's a joke in there somewhere, but I'm not sure I can find it.

Butz. Why? Because he's generic, that's why.

And technically, it's Bartz, or something, but meh. :p Fan-translations for the win.

I dare you to pick someone not-pretty and FF, like Cyan, or Basch, or Auron or something. Someone who looks like they've grown a chest hair! C'mon, man! More love for the Final Fantasy Beefcakes!

I would advise sticking with Cecil.

Well, I'm glad to be proven wrong in my original assumption that the artist has no idea how to draw people that aren't emo. Nonetheless, Terra looks even more sad that Cloud, and that should not be. Also, with Jecht in there, I can't say he/she doesn't know how to draw a man, either. Then again, that's not really his/her fault. I mean, you can only do so much with the source material. Also, that Kefka makes me smile almost as wide as he is.

Anyway, to actually answer the question that was asked, Cecil by far. Although he has marbles in his hair and is wearing purple lipstick, at least he doesn't look like he aspires to grow up to be an old woman dying of lung cancer. In a lineup full of androgyny, Butz manages to stand out as the least gender-specific portrait. No small feat. Then again, that may be the attraction. *shrugs* I dunno. Cecil looks like a woman, whereas Butz looks like a girl. I guess that makes it a more respectable image imho. Also, Cecil looks like he might have eaten something at some point in his life.

If it were me, and I had to stick with someone from the hero side, I'd probably go for Firion. In addition to being a man, he also looks like one. Kind of reminds me of Spike Spiegel, of Cowboy Bebop. Plus he looks like he's more likely to want to hurt someone else, rather than himself. It frightens me deeply that my second choice would actually be Tidus. He just looks so... content. Like a regular guy.

The villians are a more interesting bunch, with far fewer earrings. Although somehow Garland still manages to be wearing earrings despite being completely covered in armor. Also, Jecht really looks like the odd man out here. Like he got the address wrong on an invitation to an entirely different party on the same night. If he's anywhere as impressive as his character design, that might be a(nother) reason to actually play FFX.

Has anyone else noticed that the villain from FF2 is apparently David Bowie? Dance Magic Dance and all that.

Jecht and Auron are the two most, if not the only, interesting characters in FF X.

I'd recommend you play it, but play it on mute. It's better with text only rather than some of the worst voice acting I've heard.

And I agree BW, Jecht REALLY doesn't look like he fits in with the rest of the villains... Wouldn't it have been better to use that blue-haired freak whom I can't even remember the name of?

Seymour. And apparently they were going to, except the idea was each character should have a storyline connection to the villain. From an interview about the game here:

Why Jecht over Seymour?

Nomura: Jecht may not have been the final boss (with Seymour being the mid-boss), but going with Sin would obviously not work. (laughs) I thought if we chose Seymour it would be hard to show a proper connection between him and Tidus, and we'd end up having to put Yuna in too. We decided the best choice with a solid relation to Tidus would be Jecht.

Arakawa: The scenes with Tidus and Jecht should be quite an interesting expansion. In the main FF10 story the two only got a chance to talk together in the final scene. This time we're telling the parts of that story that couldn't be seen before.

Well, Jecht was a <strike>tsundere</strike> man who couldn't show his emotions, and to be honest I kind of liked the relationship between him and his son... so I'm not really against it. I hated Seymour (thanks Idran) with a deep passion, and of course the real final boss wouldn't work, just like with FFIX.

This is a pretty nice setup indeed; I'm a bit curious who they've picked as the lightwarrior(s?)...

Finally, I'm also excited about the fact that Kefka isn't in the trailers (as far as I know). Although I'll probably never be able to play the game (don't own a PSP), his entrance should be... well...

special

Yeah, he's all like "lol why so serious guyz?"

He also has some sort of ornate golden beast munching on his crotch. Man, I hated that guy. But I also kind of hated FF2.

Looks like the generic fighter(?), same guy who showed up in the wallpapers for the PSX re-release of FF1. To see art of, Go to RPGamer.com > Games > Series > Final Fantasy Origins > Final Fantasy I Art (PSX) > Protagonist. Or (/and) the official site, http://www.square-enix.co.jp/dissidia/ . Or that link Dave gave to NeoGaf.

I'm getting a subtle vibe of "Why the hell Bartz of all people?" (I guess I'll stick to that since it's official)

To be honest, it's probably more to do with his appearance-use for Rpgww, not really for his character or FF5. I thought "Oh neat, a guy with short brown hair like me!" when I first played the game, and that lead me to using his hair with Cecil's armor as my first avatar here. Which evolved into my favorite slightly neurotic but well-meaning paladin Dan and eventually his angry sibling Stephan. So he's always going to have a soft spot with me, even if it has nothing to do with FF5 directly. =P

Cecil is still, to this day, my favorite FF protagonist. I've yet to play an RPG that gives me the same feeling of "WOOHOO" I got at the end of FF4. When the prelude kicked in, and everyone cheered you on to stop Zeromus, I was so pumped and ready to kick a villians ass (even if said villian showed up out of nowhere at the end =P). And the feeling when that final battle theme kicked in, with what looked like the universe itself flying by behind you as you fought to save the world? Pure awesome.

Of course, that could all be my impressionable childhood talking, but whatever. Cecil rocks, even if they're making him more effeminate. =(

Also: Dia wins for Garland Soda avatar. =O

Yup. The name Dissidia got registered in '07, and FFXII came out in '06. Maybe they'll be unlockable...?

That could be.

It could also be that they stopped at 10, cuz 10's a nice, round number, and they had no idea who to use for 11?

Besides, if there are going to be hidden characters, why not stick to the first ten games, as they did with their hero/villain pairings?

Here's hoping to see Gilgamesh and Ultros!

Gilgamesh would be too cool; it'd break the console.
