How many times can Square remake Final Fantasy 4?

Unread postby FF Fanatic 80 » Sat Aug 25, 2007 10:20 am

Apparently not enough times

I am heavily torn here. On the one hand, this screams "Sweet Merciful Crap on a Stick guys, you just released a remake/port of this damn game >_<"

...on the other hand, this being my favorite of the Final Fantasy series (Look at Dan and Stephan if you can't figure out that one =P), I'm somewhat curious what's different this go around.

...oh and 3D Cecil looks pretty damn neat. =(

What they need to do is remake Final Fantasy VII. Christ, guys, get your ducks in a goddamned row.

As long as it's not FF6, I'll be content.

I'll buy it.

And besides, you KNOW it's gonna be jawdroppingly awesome to see it in 3D.

Think of it like upgrading from vinyl to CD... yeah, it's the same stuff, but the QUALITY... and I doubt the White Album would have been THIS awesome after a data transfer...

Well, I like the trailer at the website, but then, I primarily play Nintendo and handheld consoles, so, y'know, take it in context.

I can't really say I object to paying another $30-40 for the game, though, considering I've only paid for it once (GBA), and have gotten ridiculous playtime out of it.

...besides, my ff4gba is in Florida. :'[ I miss it.

Damn you, Dave. I'd forgotten all about this. Now I put on the game's soundtrack because I don't have the game.

I shall consider this! Besides wanting to add more DS games to my small collection, I've always liked FF4 and have fond memories of watching my dad play it for hours on end when I was a child.

That trailer looks pretty dang sweet aswell.

(Technically, you actually lose quality going from analog to digital, since there's a finite number of degrees of freedom with digital.

Plus if they didn't have the original recording masters, the CDs would have to be sound processed from the vinyl anyway, so "higher quality" would just mean removing noise.)

News about this that I've gleaned from the PA forums. This is also supposed to have the original scenario they made, but had to drop due to size of the SNES memory. They're "adding 75% more to the scenario". So this means they either are making more actual things to do in the game, seeming to make the game seem more FF6 length, or if it's just EVERYONE TALKS SO MUCH MORE, it's yet to be revieled.

So. We either have one really really fucking awesome upgrade, or a FF3 type port that just has added shinies and more talking. Either way... I'm buying it, and hope they do the same to FF5 and 6, though FF6 would need a different type of sprite than SD to me. It always seemed more adult in spirit, what with Celes being beaten while in chains, and Cid dieing and Celes doing a nose dive off a cliff to try and end her life (if you ended up feeding him about 5 bad fish).

Mmm....added shinies...

About it being 75% expanded, I heard that too, that because of the SNES cartridge's size, 75% of the script had to be cut out or somesuch. I want to say I heard it from gametrailers, not sure.

Either way, this is awesome, and I am super excited about the "true" remakes finally seeing the light of day.

The Chrono Compendium mentions something similar concerning CT. There is the whole "ohay, the English language takes up much more space than the Japanese language to express the same ideas."

And the censorship and stuff. Although most of that--that I've heard of, anyway--was just weird. Seriously, the idea of a character getting crushed to death by a giant ball is somehow less traumatizing than her getting cut in half by a guillotine?

Simple. Less thought of visible blood or whatnot.

...never mind the impending mention that no less than five members in the cast are capable of using swords, spears, or claws...

I think, if I really had to choose, I'd rather watch a person get cut in half than have to listen to them crunch and squish.

BrainWalker has a point. True, there are some crunches and squishes to be found when one's body is cleaved in two, but then again, when someone gets smashed by a huge ball, that's ALL their innards squishing and crunching together...

But were there even sound effects for that sequence?

No, she didn't get crushed OR guillotined--you rescued her, natch.

The only reason I recognized the guillotine in the GBA version was because I knew what it was beforehand. Maybe they changed it so you would know she was in danger? :3

TGS 2007: Final Fantasy IV DS hands-on

TGS 2007: Final Fantasy IV DS hands-on photo

Many fans of Final Fantasy were pleased to hear that the fourth game in the series would recieve the "Final Fantasy III DS treatment", and a 3D portable port was more than enough reason to be excited. Now that we've had a chance to get our hands on the remake at this year's Tokyo Game Show, we can say that Final Fantasy IV DS is quite a bit more than just a FFIII DS treatment, and fans now have several more reasons to be excited.

First off, recent magazine screenshots do not do the title justice -- Final Fantasy IV DS looks as good as you'd hope, and maybe even a bit better. The entire cast has undergone an extreme makeover, and all of your favorites have made the transition well. Cecil and Kain look impressive, Rydia is impossibly adorable, and Rosa is hotter than ever. If it wasn't for the soundtrack, you could easily forget that Final Fantasy IV was originally a Super Nintendo game.

Hit the jump to read more on Final Fantasy IV DS.

Speaking of sound, although the soundtrack has only recieved a slight upgrade from the original soundtrack, key events and video are accompanied by spoken dialogue. It's a nice touch, and along with the gorgeous pre-rendered video cutscenes, it leaves you wondering how they fit all of that content on a DS cartridge.

Square Enix has changed up the control scheme a bit. All of the action takes place on the top screen while the bottom is reserved for things like maps and stats. In the game's overworld map mode, travel is shown on the top screen while the bottom displays a sattelite-style view of the world. Your party can be controlled via d-pad or the stylus, with your character moving in the direction you specify with the touchscreen.

Battles take place on the top screen while the bottom displays stats like hit points and active- time battle meters. Also, when an enemy is targeted, its vitals are also shown on the bottom screen under the party's stats. The demo version we played did not support touchscreen control during battles, though we're not sure if that will be the case in final versions.

The Final Fantasy IV DS Tokyo Game Show demo didn't reveal any real changes to gameplay, although we heard earlier a few were in store. For the most part, this is still the turn-based role playing game that Square released back in 1991.

This demo was just enough to give us an idea of the visual changes applied to this classic RPG, and these changes seem like they'll do a good job of complementing the rich tale that Final Fantasy IV weaves. The characters all have a sense of individuality now, which should help with the large and diverse cast of this story. Summon spells have also recieved an upgrade with full- on, epic Square-style cinematics -- Shiva and Ifrit have never looked so good, and that's saying a lot for a portable game. Magical spells and attacks and items have all undergone upgrades, making them stand out like never before. The towns, maps, and dungeons all seem famaliar, but now have a lot of visual depth and detail, making gameplay for veteran Final Fantasy fans feel like a deeper exploration.

Final Fantasy IV really deserves a visual upgrade, and this particular upgrade should serve its deep and involved storyline well. It really is so much more than a port -- it's a reimagining, and it's obvious that Square Enix knows how much of a treasure this game is. With the game's newfound visual appeal and focus on storyline, long-time fans and newcomers will see that Final Fantasy IV DS has truly recieved the royal treatment.<blockquote>

Well it looks cool!

Rydia is a babe! That blond girl looks cold. The guys look like girls. Again. Maybe more so.

I want FF5 remake for the DS. Butz! Best hero name ever. I don't want him to be a girly man, but he will be.
Considering how many sequeals and If But games we have had of FF7 I can live without a remake of it.

I really must be the only person who has, like, zero hype for this game. But my dislike of FF4 is nothing new. Blergh. As long as they don't remake FF6 with creepy Kewpie-doll-head people, I'm fine with them doing this.

So will playing through the game be like watching a lesbian romance?

WillBaseton wrote:I really must be the only person who has, like, zero hype for this game.
I'm pretty sure there are a lot of people without hype or interest for the game, including (but not limited to) those who don't have a DS, those who don't play RPGs, those who don't enjoy the FF series, those who don't like remakes, and those who dislike anything popular. If you seem alone, it's probably because most people uninterested in the game don't post about their lack of interest--since they're not very interested. Or they're busy posting on /v/.

Cecil's voice is so much win, I just can't get over it, but it sounds perfect for him, especially when he warps into super badass paladin mode. The script also sounds surprisingly poetic.

And Kain's voice does seem pretty stereotypical TOUGH GUY VOICE, but it's not BAD, per se. Otherwise, I am super stoked.
