I exist!

It occurs to me that over the past few weeks, I haven't been very active on this forum. I've been more active on Hidden Realms, The Gungan Council, Terrawin, and in the last few days I reached a new low.

I was on Gaia more than RPGWorldWorld. That was about when enough was enough.

Granted I'm being paid for this, but I recently had reason to post here again and thought about how nice it was to be back on more familiar turf again.

So guys, here's to you and here's to being home. Hopefully I'll think of more things to do to keep myself here like I should be.

Hope you stick around! ^_^

Oh, so you exist, do you? I'm gonna have to call bullshit on that. You know, it's funny how asserting your existance, much like your sanity or your credibility, tends to lead people to question it even more. If you expect me to acknowledge your existance, you're going to have to prove it.

Everyone knows that Kai, not unlike Sanata Claus and the Easter Bunny, doesn't really exist. She's just a caricature we sell to our children, and apparently to pharmaceutical technicians for some reason.

Hey! Don't be talking smack about nonexistent peoples. Some of my best friends don't exist! And a lot more awesome people used to exist, but have since had a change of heart. Have you ever even MET someone who doesn't exist? You should try it someday--I think you will be surprised.

If I assert that I don't exist, does that mean that you'll think that I do?

Or would I be using...reverse psychology?!?!?!

I think, therefore I am from a box?

Nah, it actually is "from a machine". The original term refers to the crane, not the thing the god was sitting in when they were lowered.

Kay.

māchĭna , ae, f. = mêchanê,

I. a machine, i. e. any artificial contrivance for performing work, an engine, fabric, frame, scaffolding, staging, easel, warlike engine, military machine, etc.

I. Lit.

A. In gen.: moles et machina mundi, Lucr. 5, 96 : omnes illae columnae machinā appositā dejectae sunt, Cic. Verr. 2, 1, 55, § 145 : torquet nunc lapidem, nunc ingens machina tignum, Hor. Ep. 2, 2, 73 : trahuntque siccas machinae carinas, id. C. 1, 4, 2 : frumentaria, Dig. 33, 7, 12 .--

B. Esp.,

1. A platform on which slaves were exposed for sale: amicam de machinis emere, Q. Cic. Petit. Cons. 2, 8 .--

2. A painter's easel, Plin. 35, 10, 37, § 120.--

3. A scaffold for building: de machinā cadere, Dig. 13, 6, 5 ; Plin. 19, 2, 8, § 30.--

4. A military machine, warlike engine: machinis omnium generum expugnare oppidum, Sall. J. 21 : aut haec in nostros fabricata est machina muros, Verg. A. 2, 46 : murales, Plin. 7, 56, 57, § 202 : arietaria, Vitr. 10, 19 .--

II. Trop., a device, plan, contrivance; esp. a trick, artifice, stratagem: at nunc disturba quas statuisti machinas, i. e. abandon your schemes, Plaut. Ps. 1, 5, 137 : totam hanc legem ad illius opes evertendas tamquam machinam comparari, Cic. Agr. 2, 18, 50 : omnes ad amplificandam orationem quasi machinae, * Quint. 11, 1, 44: dolum aut machinam commoliar, Caecil. ap. Cic. N. D. 3, 29, 73: quantas moveo machinas! Plaut. Mil. 3, 2, 1 : aliquam machinabor machinam, Unde aurum efficiam, id. Bacch. 2, 2, 54 .

As mentioned above, it comes from the Greek μηχανῆς, or mêchanê, meaning the same thing: "an instrument" or "a machine".

Hey, I was there for the session where they said "machina" = "box". Which, apparently, was the worthlessest of sessions.

Well they're right and wrong.

Machina does mean machine, but it would be more accurately translated as "human created contrivance that performs some sort of practical purpose" - a title which includes box. Same goes for the greek techne (from which we get techinical et al.) which just means some sort of human-devised-skill-or-talent. So machina could mean box, but it would be the 500th choice on a very big list of possible translations.

On the subject of classics and boxes, does anyone know what the original greek for "Pandora's Box" translates to, and why the inaccurate translation to "Box" is very appropriate? (Smo you can't answer this cause I told you a couple of days ago.) Any correct answers win a prize.

I do, but only because I just looked it up out of curiosity, so I won't reveal the answer. :D
