THIS. IS. SPARTA!

All it is is an inbetween battle scene followed by the start of a battle scene, no real spoilers (other than there is a battle between Sparta and Persia OMG SPOILER ALERT).

HOLY SHIT.

Just saw the movie... absolute masterpiece. Filled two hours of my life with orgasmic joy. Acting and costumes are spot on, fight choreography is excellent, and the movie is true to the book as well (with some filler to break up the endless hordes of fighting Persians).

I recommend this movie 100%. If you don't see it on the big screen, you may regret it.

I work in a movie store and only know of it through magazines.

So yeah, this movie isn't the kind of shit that you know about or you're some backwoods hick.

This is actually the first I've heard of it, too.

.... Why, yes, it's nice and cool under this rock.

It's a historical account (with some exaggeration) of the 300 spartans that fended off the Persian army's advance during the days of ancient Greece.

It's based off a graphic novel by Frank Miller (wrote Batman Returns, Sin City, and Robocop).

So its a movie,

...based on a comic book,

...That was inspired by a movie,

... That was based on the Battle of Thermopylae.

Cool.

It's 300 men in nothing but cloaks and loincloths butchering thousands of persian soldiers. How could it go wrong?!

How could it go wrong?!

Hollywood.

They could of had a horse falling over and exploding. Or them finding magic exploding powder, stuffing it in crates, make there horses jump over ravine, while tied together, then explode in a fury of fire.

Of course for no reason some big bad dude is uneffected by fire and comes all baddass out of the wreakage and kills 296 of the 300 until the last 4 main cast stars do some square off thing that results in each one chopping off the bad asses limbs.

Or... something like that anyway.

Thankfully its not the case but it could of been done so badly!

I am upset by the historical innaccuracies in this movie. There should be more buttsex! They were Greeks, after all...

Well it isn't historicallly accurate and it isn't attempting to be. But it did achieve a certain level of homo-eroticism even if they didn't take the time to show them stroking those glistening pectorals of theirs...

...I liked Troy better.

Troy at least had characterization spread between massive fighting, to the point where I actually cared about the people. And there were no freaks of nature fighting in war like it was LotR. Seriously. If they had gotten rid of the random grotesque enemies, I'd have actually liked the movie, since I think the basis of 300 men killing several thousand is awesome in itself,
Spoiler:
hell even war elephants and the crazy ass rhino

...Also, Xerxes was like... 8 feet tall. I get that he was supposed to be psycho awesome... but it was crap like that that completely made me do a wtf moment at the movies. They put so much attention to the enemies being everything asian that it made me just dislike how it was presented.

But as to wether I'd watch it again would likely be in some manner where I wouldn't have to pay to watch it, or buy it at a price where I'd pay about what I did to go to the theatre (which was 3.50, due to college movie night)

Have yet to see it, but found this mini-review interesting.

300 is very appealing visually, and there is lots and lots of gore. Which I like. Lots of heavily muscled, sweaty men wearing short shorts, which I know appeals to some people. As [poster] said, the fight scenes are ridiculously awesome, and the acting is superb.

However, there is a lack of substance; the plot is merely a backdrop for the violence (the awesome, awesome violence), and the movie tries over and over again to be subtle and fails. Also, it IS Frank "whores" Miller, so. Even the "lead" woman fails to not sleep around.

Definitely worth the ticket, but not the greatest thing ever as some people seem to think it is.
