SUE YOU

Unread postby PriamNevhausten » Sat Jan 13, 2007 10:30 am

Stolen remorselessly from Kai's journal: http://www.onlyfiction.net/marysue2.html

A test to see if a character is a Sue! Even if you don't actually take the test, it's pretty funny to read.

Jeridan earns himself a 22. Yarr.
Shada is only a 17.

Something feels vaguely wrong about this, but I couldn't tell you what precisely.

Kurt got a 10, Milo got a big fat goose-egg, and Private Redford got a 1, despite all his angst.

*raises his hand*

Question from the new guy: is a Mary Sue basically an unbelievable and/or romantic character, then? I've never heard it referred to before.

More or less, only intended for the author to represent themself in the story.
A Mary Sue writer is the person who will write a fanfic of themselves getting bonked by Sephiroth.

Well, my main character actually got a 63 on the test....and he's not at all like me, or romantic or anything. So I was rather surprised when I saw that...

The thing tests a little bit less for self-inserts, as Mary Sues had begun, but more for overwrought cliches.

The classic Mary Sue is a character in a familiar setting (i.e. Star Trek, Matrix, a Final Fantasy game, whatever) that shares the writer's name and/or appearance and/or interests in a fanfiction where this character is more capable and powerful and intelligent than pretty much everyone else, and where all the other characters want to make the sex with them. Basically, this is literary masturbation.

The modern Mary Sue is a long-haired thin-but-strong man who is way too smart and powerful for someone his age, who wields a katana that can cut through anything with the skill of the gods. Also, his parents were killed in a tragic accident and he is full of ANGST and his name contains "Black," "Raven," "Dark," "Dragon," "Shadow," or "Hunter" somewhere. Psychic abilities and "OMG RAGE" powers are also common. In an attempt to create some sort of drama, this character often has a mysterious past (which they are all too eager to mention) and a description of their eyes that is very nearly as long as the description of the rest of their body, using gemstone words ("sapphire blue," "amethyst," et cetera) as descriptors.

Wow, The 'Character' options nearly got me. when using Deeum.
The Clone one was a given. But narrowly escaped the rest up untill the question 'Was the character ever forcibly banished from her/his family/tribe/country/etc.?' popped up. CURSES!

Though I don't know if most of these questions apply to what I've RP'd here. But I'll answer it anyways like it does. There's no fun in just skipping over most of it.

Results for Deeum: 40. It was the clone, right? Damn, it's always the clone.

and a description of their eyes that is very nearly as long as the description of the rest of their body, using gemstone words ("sapphire blue," "amethyst," et cetera) as descriptors.

Okay, I am bad for that one.

Somehow my character Lyou escaped with a 22 even though he is a god-like being that could master a skill in less than a week. Then again my other character from the same setting got 511 so...

On taking the test again my modern-occult version of Ponce De Leon got 10 and only because I put him down as immortal.

Kamos got a 62. Probably because of chimera-derived wings, high levels of power, and bishiness (Oh, and purple eyes).

Zeiren happened to be a 35. Again due to odd hair/eye colors and bishiness, I'm guessing.

:cthulhu:
Did you test for your author character? Because author characters are self-inserts (where the author=self=you). There tends to be divergence to a degree, but, yeah. That'd be the reason for scoring highly.

Dia started out as an author character, too, and has had an amount of that incorporated into her background. Thus, 57.

Eh, might as well post some results.

Il'leth: 26 (Psychic wolf searching the world to find homes and/or a future for her race.)

Myriad: 62 (Dragon who's in training for future events, though he doesn't know it. Is confused about humans and their lives.)

Shadowhunter: 1...30. Geesh. At least I can say that he's an Author character, so of course he's high? <_<

hey Dia! check it out! Remember Marina? she got a 35, borderline, if i were to integrate the lil dragon you had made for her (Godofrado, wasn't it?) that would send her straight to sue-land!
I think having princess characters skyrocket your points.

:eng101: Loving parents who just want you to be a little evil probably has something to do with it, too.

And yep, Godofrado it was! In first year Spanish, that was the most hilarious thing ever. It has, like, 4 syllables!
