Mirror'd

Unread postby BrainWalker » Fri Dec 15, 2006 8:45 pm

Okay, so I'm sure by now you guys are all aware of the fact that there's a new Zelda game out there. If you're as big a nerd as I am, you might also know that Link has, traditionally, always been a lefty. This raises a bit of a problem for the Wii version of Twilight Princess, since you slash with the Wiimote to have Link slash with his sword, and thrust with the Nunchuck to have link bash with his shield. Since the vast majority of gamers are going to be holding the wiimote in their right hand, Nintendo thought it would probably be a good idea to have the gamer's right hand correspond to the character's right hand. Fairly sensible; nothing wrong with that.

Here's what doesn't make sense. This control scheme issue doesn't exist on the GameCube, so they didn't have any reason to break tradition and have a right-handed Link. So, they didn't. So then, what happened when they decided to develop the game for the Wii? They inverted the entire fucking game. Every location, every monster, every dungeon, every NPC, everything is mirrored.

WTF? No, seriously. I have a hard time believing that it is somehow easier/more effective/more efficient/ whatever to flip the entire game than it would be just to flip the player's character model. I mean, you might have to fiddle with a couple cinematics as well or something, but come on. Everything? <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=brainwalker>BrainWalker</A]&nbsp; Image at: 12/15/06 20:51

As I said via IM, this is all sorts of fucked up.

Well, not necessarily. Remember, he's a lefty with more than just the sword. Could be that there are parts of some dungeons where, for example, you couldn't reach a hookshot point or boomerang target if you were right-handed.

Besides, honestly, without knowing the details of the TP engine, all I can go by is the fact that Nintendo is quite profit/efficiency-happy, and the fact that programmers are often lazy. And those being the case, I find it hard to believe they'd do something this vast if it wasn't easier and simpler than just flipping the model. <p><hr />

Groovy. I am amused and impressed by this solution. <p>-------------------------

lol desu desu old news

Anyhow, it makes no real difference in terms of gameplay in the long run, so it's no big deal. <p><hr />

Yeah, the game rocks regardless. Actually, my friend that bought the game plays it left-handed, and he hasn't had any problems thus far. In the end, they probably didn't need to bother inverting anything. <p><div style="text-align:center">

That's actually decently cool. Also, inverting things is *way* easy. And why is inverting the world such a big deal? <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Dingdingding! Priam wins! It's not. Get over it. And this is coming from a guy who owns every Zelda game in existence that you don't need several GBAs to play it properly.

They changed something. OH NO. When I played the game at a friends, the mechanics weren't any different than they were in the other 3d games. If anything, it just makes more of the players realize that he was a lefty who didn't really care before hand.

Wait, why doesn't Kai win for praising the solution before Priam did? <p><hr />

Because Mr. Fro is, in fact, heavily attracted to Priam. <p><hr />

Unread postby Ganonfro » Sat Dec 16, 2006 7:06 pm

It is true. Priam is a sexy bitch. If I said the same to Kai, I could be misconstrued to be sexist. I'm just keeping it in the proper context. And I didn't see Kai's reaction, so my bad.

I wasn't badmouthing you BW, but people who seemed to think this is a horrendously huge deal, the hypothetical person who'd write to Nintendo and shout angrily for changing their childhood character. Cause change is always always bad.

Technologically speaking, I wouldn't think it'd be any harder than inverting an image in paint, but in a larger scale, so it might take a couple days to do it all. Just changing Link to a lefty sounds much easier, as was previously mentioned for both comments.

Fair enough.

Nintendo has inverted things before. They're pretty fond of it in Mario Kart games, actually. But even if inverting is as easy as selecting an option from a drop-down menu in some 3D application, or running some kind of batch macro on location numbers in the game code, I still say that inverting every little thing in the game seems like more of a chore than just inverting one guy and maybe a couple of the things/people he interacts with.

Even if it is kind of cool that they went a little overboard. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

actually, now that you put it that way, isn't it more of a chore to look for every little thing that would NEED to be inverted (with chances of missing something) more of a chore than inverting everything, which is fool proof? <p><div style="text-align:center">Image
