Cave Story 2.0?

It's not actually intended to be a sequel to Cave Story, but a new freeware platformer heavily inspired by it is in the works--it's called "The Underside."

Some gameplay clips:

Clip 2

And a preview article.

Yeah, I remember seeing it and being somewhat disappointed in how derivative it appeared to be. I'll still give it a fair shake, though.

Curtis: Dannyboy, look at you. You've changed considerably, into a badass, if I may.
Dan: Yeah, you've changed a lot too, into an old man! I went to see the devil, now it's your turn!
Curtis: Oh, my pupil, so tenacious of life, guess I have to kill you again.
Dan: Shut up, before you run out of breath!
Curtis: I got rid of those smiles, there's no one left to disturb our game. Just you, and me.
Dan: Sounds fair, 'cuz I hate holding back, even for an old fart like yourself.
Curtis: Talk all you want, I won't need six bullets for you.
Dan: Or four for you.

seems fun, but half the internet will make the creator go into a inferiority complex, seeing how much it is being compared to cave story.

Image

This is from the guy who is willing to play the same survival-horror genre repackaged fifty different ways. =P

Honestly, I'm looking forward to it. If it delivers "more of the same" in any sense at all with enough new material and quirks, I'll be pleased. It seems to me like to some degree it's intended to be a more humorous game.

Image

As I said, I would give it a fair shake...

Hey, now, that's hardly true. :P Yes, quite a few of the survival horror games out are essentially retreads of the formula established around the time Alone in the Dark came out. I do play quite a few of them, essentially to get a better grasp on the workings of the formula, but my favorites tend to be titles that break free from the age-old standard (such as Enemy Zero, Clock Tower, and the like). Silent Hill is a wee bit derivative of the formula, I'll grant you that, but I like it anyway.

On that note, Alone in the Dark may just be the best game ever.

Image

What Priam said.

Also, OOT2D amuses me greatly. Impressive custom spritework too, for the most part.

Image
