There's a random matchmaking system, which as far as I know is the only way to make in-game money, but you can also play with people you know in private games.
The basic gist of how gameplay works is that each unit has a "tick" counter that increments with time. When its meter is full, it will execute a command (think ATB meter). You can also assign commands in advance and have them be executed when the time is right, or you can wait and let a unit with a full meter sit until you're ready to command them. You control a small group of units, usually four to six as far as I can tell, one of which is a "hero" unit.
Battles aren't typically decided by who kills the other player's units first. Your units actually respawn at a home point over time. The majority of points are earned by controlling map sectors, usually by bringing your hero unit to the sector in question. In one variant you attack towers called "homesteads," and once the homestead is destroyed your hero can capture it by moving to an adjacent square. In another, the hero is required to "brand" cattle to capture them. Other variants include capturing gold nuggets and transporting them back to your base, in which highly mobile units often have an advantage.
It's pretty neat, and I encourage RPGWW to check it out! I'm Ardam Elmine in game.
Oh, the in-game help is...kind of difficult to manage, because the game just came out of beta, but if you play around you can figure stuff out. There's a ? button on most menus that you can click to explain stuff, and the in-game tutorials are very logical and good. <p>
