A surprisingly awesome game based off RO?!

Unread postby Reako Somner » Mon Jul 17, 2006 8:48 am

While it's old news to some people, I finally found a sidescrolling beat em up game based off of, yes, Ragnarok Online. While that may deter some people, many can vouch for me that if you like beat em up type games, you should give it a look-see!

Not wanting to fill this topic with screenshots, I instead found this as an example.

If you're looking to play it yourself, you can find the download here. It's still not translated after all this time apparently, but it doesn't really hinder you much.

Also if anyone currently playing wants to post awesome screenshots here, I don't see why not. I finally got to Stage 10 :( *spoiler* is a hard boss.

As a side note, some PCs may require that you set the .exe's compatibility to Windows 2000. It should fix any runtime problems

I'm really not liking that download site.

You sure it isn't avaliable anywhere else?

Like say, Bittorrent? <p><hr />

Does anyone know how to beat the evil doppelganger at stage 6? He ate up all three of my lives.

And I am playing Intemera the swordswoman. (Yes, I know, she uses a trident in real RP. But this is the closest I could get.) <p>-----

The Doppelganger's pretty tough, had me stuck there for awhile. He's always start with Magnum Break, and won't use it again until you knock him into "Phase 2".

If he does a mocking motion to you, don't run forward and hit him without Endure on. He'll combo you. Immediately afterward he'll summon a stampede of Nightmares, so be ready to jump. After that he'll either do the diving stab or the dark waves. He'll jump to begin either, so it's best to stay on the ground until he's about to land, then jump over him and commence hitting. Sometimes he'll heal instead of doing the combo, as far as I know he doesn't do this more than 3 times, and when is entirely random. If you're fast, he never will.

After some damage, he'll use Magnum Break again, and start a new tactic. Most of it is easier to dodge and more telegraphed than before, plus he won't heal anymore. When he does the dark wave attack, he'll do it twice, and the combo is replaced by a sweeping motion. That's about it, really... other than that, you'll have to keep trying.

Thieves rock one's boxers at fighting bosses. Hide + Envenom or Hide + Steal will take care of 95% of the work of fighting bosses. <p>-----

The guide on how to change compatibility is broken, dead link. Anyone able to tell me how?

Since I had a minor bit of trouble actually FINDING this crap online... I present those of you who care with a compiled movelist of awesomeness. Majority of this info is gotten from www.ragnarokbattle.com/

The swordie stuff is NOT complete, as the site is DOWN now. >.< When/if it comes back up, I will organize it as with the rest of the stuff.

And don't ask how to play the Novice. Its one of the GREAT MYSTERIES OF LIFE!!! <span style="font-size:xx-small;">.... or has something to do with beating the game once with each class. But you didn't hear that from me.</span> I can't really confirm how well those numbers work for them anyway, so don't be surprised if two or three of those moves are wrong.

Nakibe wins an Internet.

Now to make use of this information for my Merchant, even though I'm basically done with my swordie already...

Are those abilities listed in the order they appear on the Edit Character Skills screen, or by whatever's convenient? Because it's not always easy to tell what each ability really is. :( <p><hr />

Goddamnit, BW, I could have used that a while ago. Oh well, at least I'll recognize the others from now on.

Also, random move tips, if mostly for female Merchants, since I've been playing one for a while!

Note that you can chain different Heavy-type attacks even without the 10 dex you normally require to chain a heavy attack twice. For example, you can chain neutral-Heavy into towards-Heavy, or down-heavy into down-towards-Heavy. In theory you can probably chain all four, but it takes some skill. This also applies to aireal attacks. Every 10 dex effectively gives you another 4 heavy ground attacks to chain (or two aerial attacks).

The (female only?) Merchant towards+Heavy air attack is godlike. It hits everything for a LOT of damage (the most for a non-special that I've seen from her) in a wide circle in the air, gives you a little more height to your jump, then hits everything in front of you on the ground when you land. Very powerful technique. Abuse it!

For the record, Vending basically summons up a bunch of healing items out of nowhere for 2 Mesos (well, assuming you already have a cart). Pretty useless for solo play since Drink Potion is free to get, and probably more efficient since Potion healing scales with your max HP, while healing items don't. Unless high-level Vending performs otherwise (I expect it'd include those bell-like things for SP recharging), it's mostly useless.

Cart Revolution effectively costs 2 Mesos since you lose the cart when you use it, but it's very powerful. You charge forward with the cart in front, smashing everything in the way, and eventually lose your grip and it rolls offscreen. You can turn around and send the cart backwards again (though its damage is reduced after turning) by pressing back+Heavy after starting the move, but before you normally lose grip on the cart.

Get Overcharge (10 agi). Even though it's mostly harmless, an offensive way to get Mesos is helpful. Use it on enemies that flinch and/or don't move around and attack a lot (the Golems of level 2 come to mind). Max mesos makes Merchants about as powerful as a swordie, ignoring the whole 'takes forever to max out cash' annoyance.

Maybe it's just since I don't (and won't, seeing the level 30 max - darnit!) have it maxed, but Mammonite seems to not be worth the cost. Only use it on powerful, nearly-stationary enemies that need to die fast and you know you can make up for the cash loss afterwards.

I still don't know what Crazy Uproar does. It seems to do damage, but it doesn't show how much. Does it increase STR/attack like in the original RO, or is it supposed to be the Merchant SP-for-damage sink?

EDIT: Oh, and for those wondering about the 10-dex thing: I snatched it from the , which has some spoilers and describes each of the base statistics as follows:

Strength (STR) - The Strength stat affects the physical damage the character can dish out with their basic physical attacks and combos (with the exception of the Archer, see Dexterity). Putting points into STR increases the MAX damage that the player can dish out. At 30STR, a character does twice the damage they do at 1STR. Strength plays a predominant role in the Swordman and Merchant classes, as well as helping Acolytes who want to use special moves and normal attacks as their main offense and Thieves who simply want more damage per hit.
Agility (AGI) - As the player put more points into the Agility stat, the character's walking speed, attack speed (for physical attacks), and evasion rate all improve. Agility also affects how fast the character can perform his or her special skills (Bash, Steal, Heal, and all magic).) Many of the classes require 10-20AGI to gain an A-button combo move. An incredibly important stat for Thieves and Magicians, who with their low HP need evasion, but all characters should have some points put into AGI, especially Novices and Merchants as they are the slowest classes in the game.
Vitality (VIT) - Vitality is the stat that helps define the character's Hit Points (HP) and overall defense. Each point put into VIT not only increases the maximum HP and defense, but it also increases the tolerance to all forms of status effects (poison, paralysis, confusion, etc). Swordmen, Merchants, and Novices are the main classes who need VIT the most, but it couldn't hurt to save some points for VIT for the other classes as well.
Intelligence (INT) - Intelligence is a stat primarily for the Magician and Acolyte class. Every point spent in INT raises damage dealt with any spells, as well as damage resistance against any spell casted on the character. Every point spent in it also increases the maximum SP by a fixed amount. Magicians should focus many of their points into this stat, and Archers might want to add some points due to their skills' high SP costs.
Dexterity (DEX) - This stat has probably the biggest difference from the online version of Ragnarok. Dexterity increases MINIMUM damage dealt to your enemies, with the exception of the Archer class's arrow attacks. Both the Archer's MIN and MAX arrow damage are determined by how many points he or she has in DEX. Overall, points spent in DEX will allow the character to hit those higher damaging swings with weapons a lot more easily. For every 10 points of DEX in the character, the player can chain another B (heavy) attack in a combo. Important stat for Swordmen, Thieves and especially Archers.
Luck (LUK) - Luck is kind of a bonus/lottery stat. The player can get through the game without it, but some people love to take chances. Basically in Ragnarok Online, putting points into LUK would raise the chance of landing a critical hit. Some players believe it gives a random 1-3% chance for every 5 points spent, while others believe that it's a simple 1 percentage point for every 3 points. With the exception of the female Merchant, who needs 10LUK to gain an A-button combo, the LUK stat isn't required for any special moves. No class really needs to specialize in it, but Thieves who want to critical hit hard and fast might want to try out a build with this stat high. <p>

Oh, THAT explains a lot. Thanks be to you, Mus, for your helpful observations on combo mechanics!

For clarification, I think the way Vending works is that higher levels of the Vending skill itself increases the quality of the items produced, while higher levels of Increase Weight Limit increases the quantity of items produced. So, theoretically, with 10 points in both you'd be producing a field of ygg berries or something. But that's kind of a huge waste of skill points, so *shrug* Also, AGI apparently increases the speed with which a merchant quaffs potions, but that's not really all that surprising considering that AGI increases the speed with which pretty much everyone does anything at all.

Incidentally, if you're playing multiplayer, apparently a merchant's Enlarge Weight Limit also increases the number of arrows an archer can carry. It'd be cool if it also increased the number of blue gemstones mages can carry, but I doubt it.

According to Our Sean, Crazy Uproar allegedly increases your attack power relative to the amount of cash you've extorted from enemies. I've not tested that theory, but it seems sensible enough.

Also, the real use of Mammonite, in my experience, has been owning the fuck out of large, concentrated mob groups, like the Poison Spore swarms they throw at you in stage 6.

I wasn't aware that Overcharge had a stat requirement.

Oh yea, and noone's mentioned this yet, so F12 pauses the game, and by pressing one of the regular buttons while paused, you can return to the "lobby," or exit the game. Very useful.

Edit: Also, I have learned a couple very important lessons about mage. If you want to play a mage, don't, unless you've played through the game a time or two and are well-versed in boss patterns. Otherwise, you are going to die.

Furthermore, learn fireball. For the love of God, learn fireball. Otherwise, you are going to die. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>Edited by: [url=http://p068.ezboard.com/brpgww60462.showUserPublicProfile?gid=brainwalker>BrainWalker</A]&nbsp; Image at: 7/24/06 14:24

After further research, I've found that Crazy Uproar is a FIXED STR increase... and, more importantly, that adding coins increases your STR NATURALLY.

Also! Discount owns you if you are a merchant. And yes, Mus is right about the Female Merchant and their Aerial Towards + Heavy. It CAN hit up to 3 times for what's currently on my Merchant about 700 damage each hit.

Also Also! BW is correct on how Increase Weight Limit and Vending work. Increase Weight Limit also has the interesting side effect in multiplayer games of increasing the Archer's Max Arrow count. All signs I can find point to a fully maxed pair of Vending and Increase Weight Limit restoring approximately 90% of your health in one shot.

And Mammonite has slightly different uses for male and female. Male Mammonite is best against bosses because you have super armor (read: Don't "stun" or flinch) after the hammer is drawn. Female Mammonite is faster and wider ranged, though. Good for mobs.

Right. I want to know how to beat the king cricket in Arena stage 20, with a swords(wo)man. <p>-----

I dunno if it works the same way with female swordies, but my male became invincible when I used Magnum Break.

And it hits three times, for around 1700+1700+3000 on most enemies. (Probably max level, but still)

It's a thing of beauty, believe me. <p><hr />

Trust me. It works for the females. And mine does four hits for roughly 8000 total, so...MB's pretty damn good. Ha! Beat him.

And Orc Lord wasn't that hard. He telegraphs everything far in advance.

My main problem in trying to get past 30 is the two Baphomets. When they spit fires in the opposite direction at the same time, I can't do anything to block or avoid it. <p>-----

Keep your distance from the mouths and stay in the air as long as possibe. I think if you get chained and then manage to do a midair recovery, you'll be invincible to the rest of that Bapho's spit-fireballs. Try to stay on the right or the left, and/or right on top of at least one of the Baphos so you can easily get behind them when they do something mean.

Also, arena matches 48-50 make me scream in fury, for my str/agi merchant is utterly incapable of beating them. I'll have to get her some levels and put everything into vit.

Also, a question for anyone who hasn't beaten the Arena yet: Do you normally start with 3 lives/ygg leaves or 2? Because I'm getting 3 now, and I'm wondering if that's due to me messing around with multiplayer or beating the arena already with my swordie or what... <p><hr />

Fire. Fire is the element you want. Once you have maxed out at least two of the fire skills, consider the Soul set.

Also, does anyone know the virtue of Steal? <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Priam lies.

Thunderstorm + Safety Wall + Soul Strike + Strategy = EVERYTHING DIES.

Now if I could just figure out how to beat the falling chicks arena match with Alice I'll be able to finish up with her in record time.

Also, getting her past match 40 appears to have given me a fourth Ygg Leaf in the Arena, so the theory seems valid. Hoorj! <p><hr />

Steal is almost useless except that for the male theif, it actually does respectable damage, I'm told. Theoretically you're supposed to be able to use it to snatch one of those random items from monsters, but even if it does work, those never really heal you all that much. You might get a concentration potion, though, I guess, which could be useful.

Also, safety wall makes casting that bigass lightning spell possible. I've never been able to do it without either safety wall or being too far from anything for it to be really effective. <p><div style="text-align:center">Image</div></p>

Steal for the male thief is good stuff. 1500 damage or so, chance to make things drop an item. And it works as an aerial dodge of sorts.

No no. HIDE + Steal = AMAZINGLY AWESOME. 2500 damage, easily comboable. <p><span style="font-size:small;"><hr />

I just found that out, actually. T'was my final strike when my thief struck the stage 8 boss =O

I dunno if I like it better than his bread and butter, though. I mean, his standing H takes him into the air, and launches. That is useful beyond belief. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Hide = OMGHAX. Stationary big opponents get raped by spammed hide+steal/envenom, not to mention it makes it all too easy to dodge major assaults... for 10 MP. I'm not sure how extra points in Hide help, but oh well.

Male regular attacks are pretty groovy too, but mostly against regular enemies (that flinch). Otherwise you've got a good chance of getting hit. Not that that means much with enough agi and max Improve Dodge, but still.

Envenom is probably better than Steal in most situations, but they're both fairly useful. And yes, steal can occasionally grab an item drop from enemies. I'm not sure if it can only work once on any given enemy, if it only steals items that they would drop anyway, or if it's just a really low chance, but it can happen. I'm not sure if it's ever actually been a concentration potion, but that'd definitely be best for a thief.

Anyway, I finished with my M-thief in about a day. Man, that's crazy. Now to make Aragan ;_;. <p><hr />
