AM has the best post in this thread.
Anyway, it really doesn't matter
what they name it, because it would be impossible for them to come up with a lamer name than [Same name as the old system]+[different number].
Edit: I just ran across a line in the Gamespot article linked at Penny-Arcade that confuses me.<blockquote>
Quote:
One industry analyst who spoke in the condition of anonymity said flat out the choice was wrong, for a number of reasons. "It's a sound that doesn't exist in Japanese, so Japanese people will struggle to pronounce it."
</blockquote>What? Since when did the long "e" sound not exist in Japanese? They can't be talking about the W, either, and those are the only two sounds present in the anem. Wakarimasen :(
It is amusing to me that it is people who speak the language that the name "Revolution" was based in who seem to be complaining the most about the name "Wii", and are generally completely missing the point. The only problem I have with it is that I'm not sure if I'm supposed to refer to it as "the Wii" or just "Wii." <p><div style="text-align:center">

I'd say "Wii", going by that explanatory page Nintendo put up. It seems they're going for it less as just a name but more as a concept to describe the system, which would suggest not using an article on it. <p><hr />

I've already developed my own way of pronouncing it. If you know how the letter i is pronounced with an umlaut over it, something like that; it makes me sound like I have developed a temporary mental retardation, which I feel is entirely appropriate to the context. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. The Japanese language normally combines consonant and vowel sounds to make letters, rather than having them be seperate. (Although the vowels can be standalone.) Most consonants have 5 versions, one for each of the vowels, but there are exceptions: n is actually standalone, and 'wa' is one of the few combinations that does NOT have corresponding sounds for -i, -u, -e, and -o. So there actually ISN'T a 'Wii' sound in standard Japanese, though most probably could cobble it together from their English lessons.
Not that anyone cares. <p><hr />

Huh. That actually makes a kind of sense.
But it's not as if they have to entirely reinvent the way they use their mouths to communnicate to pronounce "we". This isn't the R/L issue. Is it really
that big a stretch for your average Japanese citizen, unrefined in the ways of English, to follow the w sound with the long E sound, even though there aren't any words in Japanese that do that? If they can say "wa" or "ni," can't they say "wi" easily enough?
Just asking. <p><div style="text-align:center">

Well there is Oni-san, Onee-Chan - Though my spelling is completely wrong, I'm sure you get it. Or hell, even Oni. So it sounds like they can have a E sound in there but they need something before it, crazy Japs that they are.
Also the 'ii' is apprently to show the weird controller and there is two of them for the togetherness.

Well, you could kind of write it two ways in Japanese script. You could write it as "Uii," which would be extremely, extremely close even if it isn't precisely the same, or you could write it with the "wa" character first, and a small "i" after it (this is done fairly frequently, the "fu" character can be followed by a smaller vowel character to replace the "u" since "fu" is the only syllable in Japanese to use the "f" sound), followed by the second "i".
So it can be done. But it takes a little finagling. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. So, my cousin and I were talking, and noted that "Wii" sounds like "Oui", and through some feat of linguistic stupidity, decided that if this is actually the final name that we're going to call it the "Nintendo Croissant". <p>

Here's an experiment:
Pronounce this word: "tloo".
Is it hard to pronounce? Yeah, that's why we don't usually mix T's and L's in English unless it's across syllables. But even though it's not a figure we see in our language, we can still pronounce it. "Wee" is far easier to handle, in my estimation, so I don't foresee any problem with pronunciation. The guy who said this obviously underestimates humanity. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

It was the Japanese who came up with it, after all. There will be no problem writing or pronouncing the name of this thing. Especially for the younger generation, who are used to new sounds and whatnot coming into the country (quick Japanese lesson: there used to be a "wi" character, then they phased it out at the end of WWII, because everyone was just pronouncing it "i" anyway. Now it's come back with the introduction of words like "wiener," but written in a different way.) They'll be fine.
About the L/R deal. The only way it would be a problem would be if they were trying to read and pronounce the letters, instead of just saying "ell" and "arr." Which are totally different to even the most sheltered old Japanese dude.

E3 2006: DS Opera browser screenshots
Browse the net in style on the DS
We've gotten our hands on some screens of the upcoming Opera' browser for the Nintendo DS, so you can have a peek at the first Nintendo based web-surfing. It will come on a standard DS card, and as soon as the DS is within range of a Wi-fi signal, off you go googling to your hears content. "The incredibly popular Nintendo DS is already Wi-Fi enabled to support real time gaming, so adding Web browsing capabilities was a natural evolution for this device," said Scott Hedrick, Executive Vice President, of Opera Software. "Gaming devices are growing more advanced and a great Web experience is becoming a product differentiator for gaming manufacturers. Opera is excited to work with Nintendo to deliver a unique dual screen, full Internet experience on Nintendo DS."
The screens show the expected on-screen keypad, and combined with the mouse-like abilities of the stylus, Browsing on the DS will be at least as good as any PDA. It's based on the same core as the Opera desktop browser, and Opera promises to deliver the best speed and rendering of Web pages on a handheld device. "Within just five seconds of turning on the system, the Nintendo DS is already fully operational. This makes it the ideal device to enable people to swiftly obtain the latest information from the internet, wherever they are," said Masaru Shimomura of Nintendo's R & D Department. "Opera exceeded our expectations with its user friendly interface, quick access to all your favorite sites, ease of use and, most importantly, in making the best use of the Nintendo DS system's unique double screens and touch screen features. Opera is an important partner for Nintendo in our efforts to further expand the users of the Nintendo DS."

E3 2006: Opera browser also on Wii
Surf the web on your couch using the remote.
Opera has confirmed that they will follow up their DS browser with one for Nintendo's new home console, the Wii. Previous efforts to put the internet on TVs have been patchy at best, usually because of clumsy interfaces or the necessity to purchase a special keyboard and mouse. But with the motion sensing laser pointer-like Wii controller as standard, this one just might have a chance at being useful, especially for pages specifically designed to be browsed by the Wii.
"Nintendo is clearly a visionary in leading the gaming industry into the new era in gaming" said Opera CEO, Jon von Tetzchner."We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Nintendo, and work with them to deliver the best gaming experience on the Wii console and the Nintendo DS(TM)." A Nintendo spokesperson called the Opera browser "an exceptional addition to both the Nintendo DS and the Wii console."
Opera's browser for DS is scheduled for release in Japan in a few weeks as a separate product, but will the Wii version come pre-loaded? No launch date was announced, so more as we get it!
