Though, honestly, I've seen some people calling Nintendo "cowardly" for that...

It isn't the first time people have mistaken good sense for cowardliness. Personally, I think it's a brilliant move.

Oh, I agree. Like I said, rabid Nintendo anti-fanboys. The type that no matter what Nintendo chooses they'll be complaining about the decision.

Anyways, I am not saying "I HATE CHANGE THE REVOLUTION SUCKS!!", I was merely expressing fears that for every gem that comes out for the Rev, there will be scores of games that are either really lame, or comprised of mini-games that get old after a while.

It sure sounds like that's what you were saying: The point still stands that the Nintendo Beer-hat makes it tricky when developers pretty much wanna make FPS or Platformers or RPGs without having to work in a dynamic beverage suction analog control system just to be hip.

I suppose it would be redundant to mention once again how the "scores of crap for every gem" phrase applies to just about everything, ever.

The DS had nary more than the Mario 64 port for about a half a year before anything better came out. It was a dissapointment to early adopters.

Then the same thing applies to the people who bought the DS early as applies to your friends with the XBox360s. Except that most of the people who bought DSes had at least a little faith that some kickass games would be released. And hey, they were right!

I don't really see what the difference is between releasing a system and 3 games in December, and then 6 months later, having some good games come out for it, and just holding off for the 6 months while releasing nothing. If you were going to pick up a DS and Mario64 DS anyway, you might as well do it in December, play the game, and then let it sit for a few months before getting another game.

And Neb makes a great point, yes, that in this case if the...there has to be a less loaded word than either gimmick or innovation that I could use.

I don't see why you can't use "innovation" in this case. It's not like there're a whole lot of other gyroscopic controllers with light sensors on them out there. Nintendo's pretty much the first one to do that.

Innovation tends to carry the connotation that it's definitely a positive development; honestly, though I'm of the opinion that it will turn out to be such, I can't accurately say it will be until it actually is released, so the word wouldn't carry my precise intent.

I just fucking know I'm going to lose that controller for days at a time if I get this system. There's lengthy chunks of time where the remote control just goes totally AWOL in my house.

I hope they put a homing beep sort of thing on it, like they do for cordless phones.

Also also: I'm cautiously optomistic about the idea as a whole, but I will definitely tell you that I'm most likely switching to a Gamecube controller to play any Smash Bros. or Smash Bros.-esque games that come out for the system, especially if the right to use Sonic in it/them is purchased.
-_-___-___-___-_-

Wii is awesome sounding.

See, now I thought we could discuss video game consoles around here without becoming obessive paritisan idiots.

Well, save Doc, who regularly masturbates to pictures of Super Mario. We all know where his loyalties lie.

Anyhow, my point is: Shut up.

He's right, you know. I have no idea how this thread went from talking about the Nintendo Wiivolution to discussing how much of a jerk I am for not liking it.

That's because Doc got invovled.

And because you're a jerk. Jerk.

Dude, everyone here plays video games. Every single one of us. We're all gamers. Is it really all that surprising that we have deep-rooted interests in the undulations of the video game industry, or that these interests just might clash on occasion?

Anyway, before I go anywhere else, I just wanted to clear up a couple things about the controller that might be... well, unclear, since I haven't seen them mentioned yet in this thread. The standard Revo... err, Wii controllers are wireless. Right out of the box. In fact, looking at the Wii system design, there isn't even any place to plug any controllers in. You don't have to worry about losing your wireless reciever, and you don't have to worry about synching the recievier and the controller to the same channel. If memory serves, all you do is select which player you are on your controller, or something like that.

Also, as Doc pointed out, Wii will be compatible with GameCube controllers. The Revolution system design illustration I've seen seems to show a panel that flips up and reveals four GameCube controller ports, and two GameCube memory card slots. I think that functionality is designed more for their whole "massively backwards compatible" plan rather than for actual new Wii software, but I don't suppose there's any reason developers can't design Wii software that requires the GameCube controller, if they really want to.

What? Why no, I'm not looking forward to the Wii at all. Why do you ask? :P

1up has an informative article on the subject, but it's rather long, so if you don't care to read it, allow me to enumerate some key points of interest:

Wii seems to have 2 USB ports and 2 SD card slots, and compatibility with WiFi and flash memory devices.

Wii will play both GameCube discs and DVDs, but no word yet on all this fancy new HD-DVD/Blu-Ray bullshit.

Although the Wii controller has an expansion slot for additional devices, the analog stick expansion will probably be packaged with the system.

Technically speaking, the Wii will be the least graphically powerful next-generation console, but it will also easily be the most affordable. This extends to sofware, as well.

It's supposed to hit us by the end of the year, around the holiday season, but only time will tell if that actually works out.

As is customary with Nintendo, there is apparently one last big Wii secret that hasn't been revealed yet that we'll probably be hearing about at E3.

The last page lists sofware currently known to be in the works for Wii. Some interesting stuff.

Image

I know I'm way more excited about this than I was about the XBOX 360, and that still holds. I don't really even buy console games anymore with a few exceptions (SC3 was my last purcahse; before that, it was Disgaea in summer of 04').

As far as PS3 vs. Wii (hey, that rhymes now!) I'm going to say that what it looks like is "PS3 is more of the same" whereas Wii is "more of the new." If Nintendo keeps up its trend of coming out with, if nothing else, new ways to rehash their old icons, I'll be cool with it.

I really want to play a swordfighting game (Legend of Zelda anyone) where the controller is my virtual sword's "hilt" and I'm standing on my feet in front of the television moving it around in 3D instead of pressing a button to swing. That would rock so hard.

Image

I think Brian's point is quite valid.

They've made games like that, of course, mostly stuff you hook up right to your TV, but nothing with anything approaching the processing power the Wii will have.

There needs to be a hilt attachment to make it easier to swing. And a gun grip attachment to make the shooting more natural.

I'm still going to lose all my controllers between the couch cushions, though.
-_-___-___-___-_-

Get rid of the couch.

Hey, weren't we talking about the DS somewhere in here? I'd like to say that in the short span of 2 and a half games, I've learned to love Mike's and my little DS to bits and pieces. Even enough to emote over it.
