Silent Hill. The Movie.

Unread postby Endesu » Mon Apr 24, 2006 4:55 pm

Word from Zero is that he <s>did not like it</s> mildly disapproved of parts of it.

Has anyone else here seen it?

Further, is anyone else here a fan of the series, and, as such, can they offer a fan's perspective? Most reviews I've seen were from those who've never played any of the SH titles. <p><hr />

Dan: Yeah, you've changed a lot too, into an old man! I went to see the devil, now it's your turn!
Curtis: Oh, my pupil, so tenacious of life, guess I have to kill you again.
Dan: Shut up, before you run out of breath!
Curtis: I got rid of those smiles, there's no one left to disturb our game. Just you, and me.
Dan: Sounds fair, 'cuz I hate holding back, even for an old fart like yourself.
Curtis: Talk all you want, I won't need six bullets for you.
Dan: Or four for you.</span>

I got an e-mail from my cousin saying he really liked it and enjoyed it.

My work mate here also tells me it was good.

So I shall go and see it sometime this week to see myself.

My cousin is a big fan of the series, completing all the games with every ending.

As a note though, he is about as relaxed as me when it comes to critquing movies. I.E. Did my eyes bleed when watching this? No. Then it wasn't that bad.

One of the guys from Penny Arcade didn't like it but I rarely see him liking anything at all so take that as you will. <p><div style="text-align:center"> </div>

I'm going to watch it tomorrow, so I'll give a better response then. I watched a good bit of it, from the guy across the hall playing it in my room last year...

There is nothing funnier than a violin playing asian who also is into martial arts screaming like a girl to seeing a small bald child looking being with a butchers knife attacking the main character. God... I couldn't PAY for such entertainment.

I didn't dislike it, it was pretty well done, but there were some parts that were obviously just thrown in to explain things to people who haven't played the game. These exposition sequences were really drawn out and take you out of the vibe of the movie.

The arbitrary removal of Harry from the role of main character was obnoxious.

Word from a coworker is that it's not scary at all, but it kind of makes you think.

The latter part is something I have come to doubt from cinema in general. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. It made me think about why they felt a ten minute exposition sequence was required to explain that which has already been explained two other times in the movie.

I thought the beginning started off good. She's in the creepy town alone, no idea what's going on, weird shit happens that genuinely freaked me out a bit.

...sadly, that's probably the only point in the movie I genuinely felt creepted out. Then they kept cutting back to the outside world, showing her husband's efforts to find her, which really threw the pacing off. I also think they went overboard with the additional citizens of Silent Hill. It seemed once Rose met other people in the town, the weird shit just stops. All feeling of suspense just went away by that point in the movie.

And as Zero said, they went overboard with the explanations. It's as if they assumed the audience was stupid and couldn't put two and two together about the plot.

Those are the major things I didn't like about it. Otherwise, I thought the characters themselves were fine.

Also, as a brief aside, I feel the need to vent about comments I keep reading about Cybil (the cop) being a leather obsessed bondage queen.

HELLO, SHE RIDES A DAMN MOTORCYCLE, WHY DO YOU THINK SHE'S WEARING LEATHER?!

The comments thus far are intriguing! However, I have yet to see the movie, so I cannot add to them.

I would simply say that I agree that the removal of Harry is astrocious.

Also, the presence of Pyramid Head in that movie is completely pointless. It's fanwankery. Regardless of how cool he may have looked, he had no purpose in that story.

PH came about for James of SH2, to assist him in the punishing of his sins. As far as I can tell, Harry/Rose never did anything to deserve being threatened by the overgrown radiator face. <p><hr />

Don't forget, though, End, Pyramid Head predated the events pf SH2. You learn in I think SH3 that he was drawn from the imagery of the executioner back from...what was it, Valtiel's cult? So it's not the case that James's arrival in Silent Hill caused him to be formed whole-cloth. Plus...well, actually, I do have another point to make here, but I can't without spoiling the movie. I can email it to you if you want, End.

(Note: I have not actually played the games myself, I am merely going by what I have picked up on in hearing others discuss it.) <p><hr />

Oh, I know that PH was an executioner of the cult in Silent Hill (and I believe you pick up on this by reading a few particular notes in SH2). Valtiel himself is not the head of the cult but apparently a figure that 'turns' the worlds from dark to light, or from 'nightmare' to 'real', and so on. The bit in SH3 you might be referring to is Pyramid Head possibly being the 'Red God' as mentioned in the Church near the end... though I'm not positive about that inference.

Still, though, PH came about in one game: Silent Hill 2. He existed to punish James for his sins. He was/is an executioner, so he's fit for the role. However, he existed to punish. For him to appear out of the blue and *apparent spoiler* for no apparent reason is, well, dumb.

Go ahead and e-mail; I'm aware of most of the plot, having played SH1 a few times already anyhow. <p><hr />
