yeah, well, have we had a thread of these?
i recently started playing Secret of Evermore, a game (unfairly) hated for not being an actual sequel to secret of mana and overally labeled as a bad game.
I found it very fun to play, come on! a boy who quotes (non existant) obscure B-movies, a Dog who gets turned into a toaster-robot, ALCHEMY!, Bone clubbing action, actually challenging!, cameos! and scary ass monster designs*, this game does not get enough praise.
<span style="font-size:xx-small;">*-When i was younger i bought a VG magazine which was full of game concept art, the blood stained dragon picking its (also bloodstained) teeth with a lance (which was bloodstained too) freaked the hell out of me. </span> <p><div style="text-align:center"> <span style="color:fuchsia;font-family:comic sans ms;font-size:large;">LAMBO SWIMS LIKE A BRICK!!</span>

I loved SoE but was very disappointed with its lack of multiplay. If it were possible to play two-player mode with a second controller and the second player taking on the role of the dog, it would actually be much more awesome. The game's sense of humor is incredible, though. I wasn't particularly fond of the odd system quirk of requiring you to level up each weapon individually instead of a weapon class--it really gave me much more incentive not to bother worrying about it and instead to focus on my alchemy.
Before anyone comments on the gameplay further, I would like to comment that systematically aside from those weapon quirks and the alchemy system that it's identical to SoM. I have heard some weird complaints about how SoE's combat or whatever were lame, but these same people liked SoM for whatever reason. Personally, I don't think the Seiken Densetsu series does a good job of being "playable" anyway--the storylines are pretty good, but boss fights are a matter of "pound it with magic so it can't move" because trying to fight most bosses physically is a total waste of time since the only way to do damage is to charge your weapon and crawl around the screen until it's suitably energized.
I actually kind of like Mystic Quest and have played through it two or three times, but trying to play it lately gives me a headache because it's ultimately a pointless gauntlet of totally not-fun RPG battles. The weapons add a certain element of strategy that I have to say I like, though it's remarkably simplistic.
A long time ago I enjoyed Lagoon and can no longer bring myself to do so.
Harvest Moon has been declared overly repetitive and so forth. Screw those people. I love the fuck out of that game. I will water my virtual vegetables eternally and stay up all through the infinitely long night to clear every rock off my farm the first evening of gameplay.
SNES Shadowrun. Much better than the Genesis Shadowrun. A semi-fun point and click-esque game. Combat is kind of a weird propostion and it would be easier with a mouse (oddly enough), but I digress.
Finally, I have heard a lot of crap about how Illusion of Gaia was a shitty game. Everyone who thinks that can die. :( Sure, it has no replay value once you've gotten all the gems (which is ridiculously hard without a walkthrough because it's so easy to miss one and never be able to go back COUGH COUGH FISHERMAN'S POT). <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center">

Maybe it's just California finally showing its superiority in certain aspects, but around here Harvest Moon is a fairly well-loved game.

I tried to play it, and hated it. The oblique view was annoying, and I hated using the point and click system. Gimme the bitchin' rad Genesis version any day.
AND NOW FOR MY OWN CONTRIBUTION:
At a glance, Karnov looks to be a horrendous trainwreck of anNES game from Data East. Now, this is true of all Data East games. At a glance.
But once you play it, and see how awesome it is to be able to spawn ladders and shoot three fireballs at once, you will say: "I WANT TO COSPLAY AS A

also: i need to play this "karnov" the internet seems to love so much. <p><div style="text-align:center"> <span style="color:fuchsia;font-family:comic sans ms;font-size:large;">LAMBO SWIMS LIKE A BRICK!!</span>

I loved SoE, personally. The main beef I found with it was that even though the boy got to level everything up a million times, the dog got two levels of attack and then stopped. He should have had at least seven, or had to train again every time he changed into a new form. I hated Omnitopia because you had a bazooka and Toasterdog. Sure, you could get the high-tech melee weapons, but they weren't worth it, especially because the development team forgot to make it possible to run out of the good ammo. And Toasterdog was totally a twink. NO ONE in video games should be able to do that much damage with a single attack that they can use as often as they want. Give me the Prehistoria cave-dog any day. <p>-_-___-___-___-_-

I can't believe there exist people who think the Genesis Shadowrun was better. Merely attempting to ponder this causes my neurons to misfire repeatedly, sending sparks shooting off my cyborg head.
I also think Guilty Gear Isuka is fun. It's different, yes, but fuck you =D <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. It could be that it was the first Sega Game I ever rented, solely because at the time I was totally amorous for sci-fi stuff.
Also, Isuka was awesome, but to me it came off as rushed and un-polished. I mean, yeah it's got a built in sidescroller with customizable Robo-Ky...but there's only three baddies, the same boss for every level, and it's incredibly easy. Also, it has no plot.
Also, the whole game has no plot.
I got over the whole R2 to turn around easily enough, but as a whole it didn't add enough to the table to replace GGXX in any way. I mean, the fact that the attacks are a few frames different makes it impossible for me to maintain maximum combo groove when switching between the two irks me to no end.

"Terrible" games? Oni, which everyone bar-FD seemed to hate I loved. Thief 3 seemed to have earned a huge amount of hate from the Thief community but I still loved it to bits. And, just considering the opions of people around here, more or less every FPS game counts as "games everyone hates, but I actually love."

SNES. I have to admit that I like Evermore, too. Zelda 2, as well, has earned not only the distaste but the outright ire of a great many, but I find it decidedly more enjoyable than The Legend of Zelda. <p><span style="font-size:xx-small;">"It's in the air, in the headlines in the newspapers, in the blurry images on television. Wait, people hate Oni? That makes me cry, on the inside. Somewhere.
Also: I don't know whether "people" hate it or not, all I know is that cyborg automotons like Priam aren't too fond of it. King of Fighters: Maximum Impact.
There are probably more games that I like that no one else does because everyone else is stupid and inherenly inferior. <p>

Actually, Neb, I dug Alpha Centauri when I was able to borrow it from someone. I personally think it's the best direction that Meier's Civ formula ever took.
Also, I only played a demo, but Oni seemed fun. Just really repetitive.
Anyway, my pick for the game is easily Clock Tower 2 (or Clock Tower in the west) on the PlayStation. Although many people hated it for its point and click ways, I thought the game was a very solid, very creepy horror title. Sure, the final level in the castle was fucking horrible, but the rest of the title was great and was just creeping with suspense. Now, Ghost Head (or CT2: TSW) really wasn't that good. I'll agree with people on that one. <p><hr />

Genesis Shadowrun. Sorry, Brian, Priam. I played this one first, is all. It was good. And THEN I tried to break the game in every way I possibly could. It was cool, fun, and generally worked like I expected it to.
Lets see... I have a small list of games people hate that I love, but I can't remember them all right now.
Secret of Evermore. Anyone that hates it but loves Seiken Densetsu 2/Secret of Mana is a moron. They actually IMPROVED on some places (except the magic. Alchemy can be annoying at times), and the B-movie flavor appeals. Spleen is wrong, though. They DIDN'T code the Bazooka Wrong... entirely. Found out through my own play that it only works "properly" if you use the lowest grade of ammo available. And none of them make you more powerful than the ToasterDog, so what's the point? >:P
Final Fantasy : Mystic Quest. Yes, I know, its basically a dumbed-down FF. But its fun enough on your first playthrough, and as Brian said, its got some strategy with the weapon-switching.
Also: People hate KoF: Maximum Impact? Wow. Some folks have no taste. >:{{{ But seriously, if they cleaned up the many many (MANY) off-the-ground combos, it'd be excellent. As it is its pretty damn good.
Kingdom Hearts 1. I can see WHY people hate it (BAD CAMERA, NO BISCUIT), but I still have a sort of like for the game anyway. Can't really explain it without beating the crap out of Sephiroth once more. >:P
Hm. Not sure how many of my other games I've played people hate, but eh. One of these days I'm going to make up a huge super list of all the games I've played.
Whoops. Forgot about Ehrgeiz. Great game, although having played the game that it was TRYING to be... I miss Tobal 2. ;_; <p><span style="font-size:small;"><hr />
Currently idolizing - Roger Bacon, Shadow Hearts
Likes : Forbidden magics, Determined people, His teacher
Dislikes : Stupid people, Church officials, People that prey on the weak

I adore Kingdom Hearts. Played through 3 times already.
I also really like KOF:Maximum Impact.

Can't really think of many other games people hate. If someone listed the hated games I'd probably know.

Oh, and Siren. Sure, the game is hard as hell, the controls are somewhat clunky, the English translation isn't that good, and the objectives are completely impossible to accomplish unless you have an immense amount of patience or a strategy guide...
... but it's a solid game. The stealth aspect works well and adds quite a bit to the creeping tension of the whole thing. The 'link'ing relationship between the various characters is also intriguing, and something I haven't seen done in any other titles (the actions during one character's game affecting another character's game).
Oh, oh! And Illbleed for the Dreamcast. Sure, the controls are still clunky (and who the hell decided to throw in a jump function?!), the trap system can sometimes, very quickly, lead to a frustrating loss of adrenaline, and trying to manuever around some areas (such as the lumberjack challenge) is incredibly frustrating. But it's still compelling, with the focus being to actually avoid the scary stuff instead of running head-on into it. There's definitely a layer of strategy here, one that could've been improved upon.
The humor's also great, with plenty of slapstick and nods to Tremors, Poltergeist, Friday the 13th, and so on. <p><hr />

No. I say "good" not fabulous and mindblowing. My list of games tends not to dip below a 7 from EGM, usually 8. The only exception is Serious Sam, which I simply play for brainless fun (AKA go in, make as many enemies' heads explode as possible, and go out).

Shadowgate. If you've ever played it through, I'm amazed. Amazed that you never brought it up and laughed about it. Dragon Warrior 7. Most people hated it for its length, and for the sheer fact that, well, the characters themselves got little development. Me, I saw it as a collection of short stories packed into a game. Plus, class-changing. What's -not- to love about a little wolf-boy dancing around as a Superstar?
Hm. I also loved Beyond Good & Evil, though that probably doesn't count...it wasn't disliked, just unpopular. Damn communists, probably. Or the aliens have already started taking over...
Fu fu fu fu...Dragon Warrior 5 and 6 as well, I suppose. Not sure if those count...everyone else picked all the good hated games already. :{
Oh, wait. FF5. Love it. Hate the fact that X-death is actually a tree, but love it otherwise. Certainly no worse than FF4, after all, plot-wise. (C'mon, Cid jumps out of an airship with a bomb strapped to his chest, and recovers after a few days of bedrest? 'Ohnoes, our brainwashed friend just stole the last crystal! Too bad we can't hit him with a stop spell!' Feh. I could go on.)
I guess that's it, on the list that others haven't already called. I liked SoE, FF:MQ, and Shadowgate, but I won't go into any more detail on 'em. <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center">

Lets see..
It's to my secret shame that I enjoyed ClayFighters 1.
It's a horrible, horrible fighting game, but I can't help but like it for the opening theme song.
Might and Magic 8. I'm not sure if many of you have played it, but I know a fair few have and didn't like it. I loved it dispite the whole "ONLY THIS RACE AND GO UP THIS HIGH IN MAGIC/TRADESKILLS." It kinda pushes you to have a Dark Elf if you want any amount of bargaining skills. :/
Damn it, if I want two necromancers in my party, I damn well want to have them!
Kings Quest 7(I think): The Princeless Bride.
It was cartoony and silly.. but I loved it to death. One of my favorite adventure games to date. <p><div style="text-align:center"><hr />
