I loved SoE but was very disappointed with its lack of multiplay. If it were possible to play two-player mode with a second controller and the second player taking on the role of the dog, it would actually be much more awesome. The game's sense of humor is incredible, though. I wasn't particularly fond of the odd system quirk of requiring you to level up each weapon individually instead of a weapon class--it really gave me much more incentive not to bother worrying about it and instead to focus on my alchemy.
Before anyone comments on the gameplay further, I would like to comment that systematically aside from those weapon quirks and the alchemy system that it's identical to SoM. I have heard some weird complaints about how SoE's combat or whatever were lame, but these same people liked SoM for whatever reason. Personally, I don't think the Seiken Densetsu series does a good job of being "playable" anyway--the storylines are pretty good, but boss fights are a matter of "pound it with magic so it can't move" because trying to fight most bosses physically is a total waste of time since the only way to do damage is to charge your weapon and crawl around the screen until it's suitably energized.
I actually kind of like Mystic Quest and have played through it two or three times, but trying to play it lately gives me a headache because it's ultimately a pointless gauntlet of totally not-fun RPG battles. The weapons add a certain element of strategy that I have to say I like, though it's remarkably simplistic.
A long time ago I enjoyed Lagoon and can no longer bring myself to do so.
Harvest Moon has been declared overly repetitive and so forth. Screw those people. I love the fuck out of that game. I will water my virtual vegetables eternally and stay up all through the infinitely long night to clear every rock off my farm the first evening of gameplay.
SNES Shadowrun. Much better than the Genesis Shadowrun. A semi-fun point and click-esque game. Combat is kind of a weird propostion and it would be easier with a mouse (oddly enough), but I digress.
Finally, I have heard a lot of crap about how Illusion of Gaia was a shitty game. Everyone who thinks that can die. :( Sure, it has no replay value once you've gotten all the gems (which is ridiculously hard without a walkthrough because it's so easy to miss one and never be able to go back COUGH COUGH FISHERMAN'S POT).
