Soul Calibur III...

Unread postby FlamingDeth » Mon Oct 31, 2005 1:30 pm

...is totally awesome. THOUGHTS ON IT.

STORY MODE: This is kind of silly, but perfectly acceptable for a fighting game. You go through as a character, and see a text-based story between fights! Sometimes you get to make vague text-based plot decisions that near as I can tell don't actually affect anything. This is how you unlock new characters, too. This mode gets you a shit-ton of gold to unlock things with.

Speaking of which, CHARACTER SELECTION: Hot damn. Looks like they have all the good characters in it, mostly preserved so that you can use them about as well as you could in 2. The new characters are also all awesome, TO THE MAX! Tira is evil, and Zasalamel isn't as hard to pronounce as it looks. Oh, and Sigfried is back, and not just as an alt-skin! I've yet to unlock all the characters (I have all the important ones though, which is to say, Lizardman), as I've had the game for like, five hours, most of which has been spent in not-story mode.

CHRONICLES OF THE SWORD: This mode is...weird. It's kinda like a story mode for custom chara--

Ok, wait, first: CUSTOM CHARACTER CREATION: Thought I should talk about this before that one up there. Whoever designed this system deserves a goddamn medal, fo' real. I haven't even unlocked a whole lot of the parts yet, and it's still incredibly awesome. You select gender, then class. "Class" determines what weapons they can use, and how they can use them! Yeah. Lots of customization here. So far I've been able to make things from tarzan-wannabes to ninja-folk to paladins to guys in tuxedos with tophats and monocles.

Ok, back to CHRONICLES OF THE SORD: This mode is...weird. It's kinda like a story mode for custom characters, only an attempt to mish-mash it with a strategy game. As far as strategy games go it's pretty stupid, but there's nothing like beating a level 60 Astaroth with a level 2 theif.

There's also a few more of the old-standbys (quick play, tournament, survival mode). Those aren't really worth covering.

Anyways, since the custom characters are just SO DAMN AWESOME, I'm going to talk about them more.

When customizing a character, class doesn't affect appearance at all, so you can be a barbarian in a tuxedo if you want, just as an aside. Anyways. There are two meters that you see when making a character. Different items/articles of clothing/etc affect the positioning of these two meters. The top one measures how "good" or "evil" your character is. The bottom one measures how "light" or "dark" said character is. The lighter your character is, the more joking he is. The more evil your character is, the more downright mean he is. So, if you have a dark, evil character, his pre-fight saying may be "I'll tear off all your limbs!", whereas a light, good character might say "Come now, can't talk this out over a nice cup of tea?" instead. Coloration of things doesn't change the light/good bars.

Anyways, classes DO affect the weapons you can use! I haven't unlocked any of the extra classes yet, though I've unlocked a few weapons.

BARBARIAN: This class starts off being able to use a greatsword, so my "paladin" character is a barbarian! The other weapons I've unlocked for them is the "grieve edge", which is blades...for your feet! Amazing.

MONK: Starts off using nunchaku. Haven't unlocked anything else with them.

THIEF: These guys start off using a "knife". Sort of. That's what it says they use. While they do have a knife that they can stab things with if they want to I guess, I just end up throwing bombs at people. The other weapons I've unlocked for them are the Wave Blades. These are two curved swords they hold across their forearms, like tonfa. Not like Talim's weapons, these look like actual swords. Curiously, my ninja character is actually a thief using these. My favorite weapons. :D

SAINT: These guys start off using what the fuck? I don't even know. It says "staff", but it looks like a small stick, but gets bigger depending on what move you do. It wierds me out, dude. On the other hand, their default outfit has a pope hat.

NINJA: These guys are awesome, seriously! They start off using kunai, and they can like, roll around, jump around, teleport everywhere, and stuff. Woah. The other weapon I've unlocked for them is the Shuriken and Katana (both at once!). Yeah.

I forget if there are any I'm missing, but you get the idea. I know that the Barbarian can end up using Nightmare and Astaroth's weapons at some point, too.

Last but not least: In Versus mode, you have the "random character" button that selects a random character. Typical. You also have the "random custom character" button, which selects a random class, random weapon, and a completely random appearance. It's absolutely hilarious. Nothing like having it come up with a green ninja in her underwear wearing a clown hat and a monocle.

"Saint" does staff tricks- like Goku's rod that gets longer or shorter- except the Saint staff also can get really thick.

Favorite Saint attack: Holds stick like a bazooka, then it turns into a huge log to smack your opponent in the face.
[---------------------------]

I haven't unlocked the pirate class yet I'm afraid. Multiplayer with random custom characters is just too hilarious to be playing much else. :'(

EDIT: And Steve :( should just go to the freakin' store and get it. I hear they sell games there sometimes.

Well, it got me to actually enjoy playing against other people in a fighting game, so who knows?

Oh, and Joe is forbidden from going into battle without pants ever again. EVER. >:{

Seriously. I hate having to take my glasses off just to watch a bout without wanting to gouge my eyes out. That hurts and isn't very easy to do without fingernails.
--

Me an' my girl just bought it. She's kicked my ass in all but one match.

And Josh is right about the 'Random Custom' option. I got a female saint who was totally bald and wearing a green super hero outfit. That was pretty bad ass.

I ended up wining with her just because she weirded my girlfriend out so bad.

I got my copy on release day, been playing it pretty solidly since then. On the last chapter of Chronicles Mode and I've beaten Tales Mode with everyone but Tira, Rock, Lizardman, Astaroth, and Talim. Great game, although the PS2 controller is taking its sweet time to get used to. I might actually write up a review for the game, depending on how busy I am within the next few days.

And CC, yes, there are lasers in one part of the game which I will not spoil. You just don't get to use them. And they're not laser guns (it's set at the end of the Japanese feudal period, not some crazy sci-fi fantasy hybrid land), just laser beams.

So, since I was bored at work, my mind naturally wandered to video games. Specifically, as it's new, SC3! I started formulating a comparison between the game mechanics of SC3 and actual armed combat. I've discovered that, out of all the fighting games I've played, it has the most solid and realistic combat system of all of them. The actual animations are hardly realistic, and seven foot swords shouldn't ever move that fast, but the game mechanics still work out. Comparisons are going to be done with fencing, as that's what I have the most experience with. As an aside, this is long and boring, and most of you probably already know it. I just thought it was cool at the time.

Mostly this has to do with defense. If someone attacks you, you have a choice on what to do. The easiest thing to do is block it. Blocking is actually the most unrealistic part of the system. At best I can equate this to huge, sweeping parries, which tend to work most of the time, even if you can't really follow up with anything afterwards. Unless...they feint. You can do that with most of the moves in the game! Cancel in the middle, attack in a different line while they continue to defend the orignal line like an idiot. So, when blocking, you have to either be good enough to notice changes in line soon enough to block them, or know your opponent well enough to know when they're going to feint out of something. But if you can do that, then there's no reason not to...

...guard impact! I love these things, fo' real. They require you to pay attention, and time things correctly. It's like a real parry! Hooray! They attack, you guard impact/parry, and while they're busy recoiling from that, you get to attack them! Just like a riposte! And they stand there like a chump while you attack them. OR DO THEY? Not necessarily, because if they've just been guard impacted, the only thing they can do in return is...guard impact. It's like those lovely little exchanges that you see in foil/sabre. Attack, parry, riposte, parry, riposte, parry, and on it goes...

But then you have guard-breaking moves. In fencing, these equate to beats/binds/glides/etc. Something to get them out of guard, so that you can stab them in the face! It's like an offensive guard impact! But still, as always, they can guard impact, even if they can't do much of anything else. Repeat the cycle until someone misses a guard impact and is comboed to hell.

And then we have unblockables. There's really no easy way to equate this. Something that will not only break through your guard, but do full damage to boot?! Inconcievable! But wait...while guarding against these is moronic, you can even guard impact unblockables. It's easier to just get out of the way, as messing up the timing on it will get you hurt badly, but you can still do it. Then you can follow up with some fancy moves of your own!

I suppose what it all comes down to is that the mechanic behind guard impacts is freakin' awesome, seriously. Whoever designed that needs a medal.

I was going to buy this game, because Judo refuses on account of Namco breaking his trust and only putting it on the shittiest 'modern' system out there. And then I heard Necrid was not in it. I more or less button mashed Chris's soul into oblivion on this game last night.

I'm sorry Chris. I jsut button Mash well. :{ Really well! He schools my random gen characters with Raphael, though. ... Also, how random is it if 2 out of 3 times, the random chracter genny makes you a dancer or a ninja? No seriously. Chris and I always ended up as a dancer, a ninja, a nunchuk user, and just rarely a priest. But never anything else. ... And fuck but those Nunchuk people combo well.

Also: WHERE IS MY PANTS, WHY AM I BALD?

I'm tempted to make some dumbass comments like I did last game. So here I go.

Yoshimitsu gets a culuthu outfit, which is the only one I'll actually play him wearing now. And I still kick ass with him, thank god.

Nightmare's moves from SC2 got taken from him and spread out over Sigfried, the Iron Sword disipline, and Nightmare again. Thus, I have problems playing all three, as things don't sync up like I want them to. And none of them get that one move where when he's walking in a circle, he chops twice horiziontily and then follows up with a giant overhead swing. That was awesome and I miss it so.

Asteroth: HAMMER HAT.

Maxi still looks like a cross between Elvis and Bruce Lee. I approve of this.

Seong Mi-Na seems to be continuing her decent into a character that the devs are throwing in just so her fanboys don't write them too many angry e-mails. (E.G.: She's a female skin for Kilik.) That makes me sad. They also spell her name way weird now.

Raphael is a vampire or some goth shit now. I am unsure of my feelings toward this.

Lizardman is still what Sophita and Cassandra would be like if they didn't suck.

Rock returns! Bongo still unplayable. Good times mixed "With what the fuck why didn't they do that yet I mean even fucking Amy get's thrown a goddamned bone here seriously what the fuck."

Tira is fucking insane. FUCKING. INSANE. I like her.

Zazalalalalazemel is hardcore, but I can't play him. He reminds me of a Aribic Samuel L. Jackson. It's cliche but it's true, damn it.

And after all that being said, let me just say that I'm loving the story mode now. I mean, it's like they fucking took that one mode where you traveled place to place and earned money and all that jazz but actually made it relate to the characters. It's also arcade mode with more then one 'Story' fight. I love it.

I'll spell check this post once I figure out what the fuck happened to my version of Word on this computer.

"Zasalamel".

Also, I reccomend instead making use of the Priam spellchecking system!

Also: The hammer hat also goes with the nails that are pounded randomly throughout his body. It's still inferior to the Noid hat though.

Seong Mi-Na is visibly different from Kilik- she's considerably faster and she has more versatility. Plus her style is significantly separate enough from Kilik's for me to consider them discrete characters.
[---------------------------]

While messing around with the character creator last night, I made a few new versions of RPGWW characters. The three in question being a more faithful version of Will (AKA using a katana instead of twin daggers), Aya (Knight class using Great Swords), and Hakaril (Sage class using Chinese Rapiers, although I'll probably remake him as a Pirate with a Chinese Sword).

In boredom, I set the game to Battle Theater Mode and started having the characters fight. Aya beat Will pretty solidly, and Will managed to take Hakaril down. Hakaril fought pretty heavily against almost everyone I put him up against (IE anyone the chat asked me to last night), but lost to everyone except Raphael and Yunsung. So, in summation...

Aya > Will > The Cast of SC3 > Hakaril > Raphael and Yunsung.

I might try and make some more versions of RPGWW characters soon, and once I get my hands on a camera, upload pictures of 'em.
