Funny you should mention that, Jak--the dragoon class's main selling point is that it gets a pet, and the pet is a wyvern. The wyvern can only be summoned once every 2 hours, but its duration is infinite unless it is killed. You get to name him (picking from a list, which can be expanded by doing a certain quest, allowing you to rename him), and he flies around with you attacking your enemies. When you use a weapon skill (limit break, essentially), he attacks with his breath in unison, and if you cast a spell, he uses healing breath to regenerate your hit points if you are at 33% or less health. That ability gets much better when you have one of the dragoon's later pieces of equipment, as he then heals you at 50% of less.

Without the wyvern, DRGs aren't quite as good at dealing damage as a lot of other melee DD classes, but they totally win on style anyway. I take every opportunity to invite dragoons to my parties, because they are sadly underappreciated--they used to be broken as all fuck, and now they're simply "as good as" other DD classes. The problem is that due to the nature of human psychology this means that a fair number of people think DRG suck compared to dark knights or samurai or whatever, which is simply not true. <p><hr /><div style="text-align:center"></div>

I am reminded here to have Brian tell you all about how SAM/DRG is possibly one of the worst things you can do for a character in FFXXI. I don't spend much time on anymore, but from firsthand knowledge this acts pretty much like a leper skin, you'll NEVER get invited into a group and will likely be ignored when asking after one.

That's the fastest I've ever seen 40 people die in my life. For my part, he hit me with his giant hammer, which caused me to hit a wall, bounce off, and fall into a pool of lava.


EDIT: If you catch me while I'm actually online and *not* in WoW, I do have larger versions of both of those, I'm just being dial-up friendly. I think. I also have a few pictures of the "fight" that went on in between those two, which mostly consisted of him beating the tank to death with his hammer and then people catching on fire for no apparent reason. <p>

Two things:

1) The FF Fanboy in me finally came out of dormancy, and I purchased Final Fantasy XI online. Currently playing a white mage with a hammer of smashing faces in.

2) Not even one day into playing it, and I have an embarrasing public moment!

A creature used a damage-over-time (dot) spell on me, and I ran into town to escape. Made it in and thought "Woo safety!" However! I failed to notice the dot was still ticking away, and the following ensued:

Moral of the story? Double-check your status after fights, even in towns!
